Unit3 Friendly Massage
Dear Anna,
How are you? I’m OK. It’s Sunday afternoon, and I am at Starbucks cafe. It is a very cold winter day in Toyama. I am sitting at a small round table in a corner. I am reading and thinking of you.
I had a very interesting experience during my recent trip to Hokkaido. It was a really cold day. I went to a beach. There were no people, so it was silent. However, I found an old woman with a shovel and towel. I wondered what was she doing. Suddenly, she was starting to dig in the beach. 30 minutes later, she took off her clothes, and entered that hole. I was very surprised. I went up to her, and I found steam. It was a hand-made spa! Anyone can dig and make their own. Finally, I dug a spa and took a bath. It was really good! The beach is in Hokkaido.
I have good friends here, so I want you to come to Japan, and meet them. I will guide you around Toyama city. Maybe you will like Toyama. And also, let’s go to Hokkaido to enjoy making and take a spa!
Your friend,
Haruna
Unit5 Write a story
Haruna’s First Day of Teaching
Today was a very hot and humid day, and also Haruna’s first day of teaching English to elementary school students. She was very nervous.
At 6:00 a.m., Haruna got up and took a shower. She didn’t eat breakfast. Unfortunately, she forgot the map to the school because of her blind haste. She went to Sogawa Street by bike, and arrived 1 hour before she was due to teach. She had a little time, so she had coffee at Starbucks. 15 minutes later, she went to the school. However, she couldn’t find Yanagimachi Elementary School, so she asked at a gas station the way to the school. Mr.Tateno, a gas station attendant, tried to guide her to the school, but he mistook the road and they arrived at another school. That wasted 15 more minutes. Haruna was very nervous because she worried whether she would arrived on time.
At last, Haruna arrived at Yanagimachi Elementary School. Her teacher and friends were waiting for her. She apologized for being late. At 8:15 a.m. she started to teach. The students were about 11 years old and very cute! Haruna taught them about the names of insects. The kids looked like they were having fun. They enjoyed some games and songs. In the end, they took some pictures together. Haruna was relieved and happy that everything had worked out in the end.
Moving to Toyama
By Takahashi Haruna (2F)
The event that has changed my life the most was moving to Toyama. I was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and lived there until I was 11 years old. I was really shocked to learn we would be moving to Toyama. I didn’t want to leave because I had many friends. There are some similarities between my life in Hokkaido and my life now, but there are many more differences.
In Hokkaido, I was a member of my elementary school’s basketball team. I was not good, but it was fun to play with my friends. I used to practice after school and on Saturdays, and also on Sundays, I had some games with other teams , so I always spent my time with teammates. When sometimes I had free time, I used to go shopping with my friends by subway. In Sapporo, many people use the subway. When we moved, I was very sad to leave my friends.
After I moved to Toyama, I was really surprised at the many large rice fields. I’d never seen them before. Of course I’ve seen rice fields, but they were not like Toyama’s. Toyama’s rice fields are with in the city limits. They are next to big shopping malls, so I was surprised. The day of I moved to Toyama, It was 38℃! It was awful! My family didn’t have airconditioning, so we took a cold water bath many times each day. At my new elementary school, I felt many differences between Sapporo and Toyama. First, I had to wear a girl’s sports uniform. It looked like a underwear, so I was embarrassed. In contrast to Sapporo, I never wore a sports uniform like that. Second, a big differences was the Toyama dialect. I couldn’t understand what teachers and students said, and I felt I was being scolded all the time. I always made fake smiles. However, when I said “Zangi(fried chicken)” , people weren’t able to understand. I thought my Japanese was normal, but it was not. I spoke with a Hokkaido dialect. As time passed, I became aware that I must speak with a Toyama dialect; without this, I couldn’t communicate with anyone. Once each winter, I went to a ski camp at school. At first I didn’t want to go because thought I wasn’t good at skiing. However, I was surprised to discover that I was the best! Why? I think because winter sports are popular in Hokkaido, people there are at a high level. I’ve had many problems in Toyama, but I enjoy my life. I love Toyama’s beautiful nature and great fresh food.

I love her big smile! I’ve never watched her movie, but I know her face and voice. Why? It’s because she is really famous, and she is loved many people all over the world. I researched about Audrey Hepburn, until that time, I didn’t know she visited and helped people in developing countries. I was very surprised. I’m interested in volunteer, so I feel her more closely. I really love her!!
